Speaker Welch’s State Central Committee Campaign Adds Endorsement of Former Black Caucus Chair Rep. Sonya Harper

Chicago, IL– State Rep. Sonya Harper is the latest champion for economic justice and social equity to rally to House Speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch’s campaign for Democratic State Central Committeeperson. Harper, who has served as chair of the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus and a non-profit executive serving the Englewood community, adds her endorsement to a broad coalition that now tops 50 community leaders, activists, and changemakers driving Welch’s campaign.

“Speaker Chris Welch has shown the steady leadership and results-driven vision we need at every level of our party,” said Harper. “I’m honored to support him for State Central Committeeman so we can continue building power for everyday people—urban, suburban, and rural—across Illinois.”

Working together in Springfield, Harper and Welch have pushed to pass major equity-based reforms that promote equal access to justice, education, opportunity, and economic empowerment. As extremists across the country seek to silence diverse voices, Welch and the 50+ Democratic leaders behind his campaign are working to ensure that the Democratic Party of Illinois’ State Central Committee looks like all of Illinois.
